Atchison football is coming off one of the program’s best seasons with a 10-1 record and averaging over 50 points per game and earned a third straight league title. The Phoenix will be going for another Meadowlark League title with half of last year’s starters back on both offense and defense.
Benedictine Football heads into the 2024 season with key pieces returning and lofty expectations while also coming off an off-season that was filled with tragedy. In May, the program’s legendary offensive line Coach Papa Papageorgiou unexpectedly passed away, and in late July incoming freshman Caleb Stricker also sadly passed away.
After a rough 2023 season, Maur Hill-Mount Academy hopes that those growing pains and experiences will pay off this year on the gridiron. “It was definitely a bumpy year with a lot of adversity, but the guys stayed committed and never gave up,” Head Coach Zack Fredrickson said.
Atchison County Community High School has a number of roles to fill from the 2023 season with the departure of some big pieces, particularly in the trenches. “We lose a big part of our size and key experience up front, which is always tough to replace, but is an opportunity for some new kids to step up and become leaders,” Head Coach Kody Tegtmeier said.
Benedictine Volleyball opened the regular season on Tuesday with a pair of sweeps over Hannibal-LaGrange University and (RV) Bethel (Kan.) College inside the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium. In the opener over Hannnibal-LaGrange, (RV) Benedictine earned a 3-0 win behind 24 aces and followed up with a 3-0 win over Bethel to close out the Benedictine Triangular.
The Benedictine football program has been a significant part of the Atchison community for many years starting under legendary coach Larry Wilcox and his 41 years at the helm. The program has often helped give back to the local community and under fourthyear Head Coach Joel Osborn that standard continues to be upheld.
Benedictine Women’s basketball hosted 35 high school players in the programs inaugural High School Elite Camp last week. Head Coach Chad Folsom said getting able to have an early look at potential recruits down the line was a nice addition to program’s late summer schedule.
Benedictine Volleyball head coach Victoria Hurtt announced the program’s new assistant coach. Camila Leite joins the program after former assistant coach Kristen Webb resigned from her position as assistant coach earlier in the summer.
Information compiled by Tom Hoopes and Benedictine College Former All-American track and field athlete Lindon Victor earned a bronze metal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the Men’s Decathlon over the weekend. Victor’s recorded time of 4:43.53 in the 1500 meter event that secured the Bronze for him and his country of Grenada.
