Ellen Mae Miller Hickman, 87 years old, of Loveland, CO, formerly of Good Intent, died Sunday, August 11, 2024. Mass of Christian burial to celebrate Ellen’s life will be Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. A rosary will be on Tuesday evening, Aug. 20th beginning at 6:00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 7:30 p.m. She will be laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery and a lunch will be served following the burial at St. Joseph Church. Memorials are suggested to Mt. Calvary Cemetery Endowment, St. Benedict Parish, or Dementia Research. Funeral care by the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Ellen was born on May 4, 1937, in Wathena, KS, the daughter of Charles S. Miller and Edna Mae Fleek Miller. She graduated from St. Louis Grade School in Good Intent and from Mount St. Scholastica Academy in 1955. She worked at F.W. Woolworth and Saunders Manufacturing Company before becoming a homemaker until moving to Boulder, CO, in 1969. She went to work for Ball Aerospace in 1974, working in quality control as an inspector, until her retirement in 1993. She was a member of St. Benedict Parish and the church altar society until she relocated to Loveland, CO, in November of 2018. She and Jack Hickman were married on February 4, 1956, at St. Louis Church. Jack preceded her in death on July 7, 2016. She is also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Richard (Dorothy) Miller, Burnace Miller, Melvin Miller; two sisters, Elaine “Sug” (Max) McGuire, Eunice “Dolly” Fesperman; brothers-in-law, HB Keithline, Gene Geisendorf, Kenneth (Maxine) Banks; and sister-in-law, Christina Ganter-Larkin. Ellen is survived by a son, John Lee Hickman, Broomfield, CO; four daughters, Pamela Kay (Dale) Bowman, Holton, KS, Vickie Ann (William) Priest, Goodyear, AZ, Lisa Rae (Dwight) Hickman-Lott, Loveland, CO, May Kim Ameur, Worland, WY; fifteen grandchildren, Kerry Bowman, Erin Merchen, Laura (Drew) Lanter, Christopher (Jamie) Priest, Tracy Bowman, Cassidy (Chri
Duane E. Chick passed away on August 18th, 2024, at the age of 90, in Salina, Kansas. He was born on August 18th, 1934, at the Horton Hospital in Horton, KS, to Charles and Ruth (Banks) Chick. Duane spent most of his life in Whiting, KS. He went to Banks Country Elementary School in Whiting Township and graduated from Whiting High School. Proud of his family and its legacy, Duane was a lifelong farmer and cattleman, working on the Chick Family Farm. Ever hardworking, Duane also spent years as a Radiographer and Film Reader at Atchison Casting. Duane married his loving wife, Betty M. Larson, on August 21, 1955, and they shared 69 years of marriage.
Sharon Theresa Stephens, 69, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Monday morning, August 12, 2024 at the South Central Kansas Medical Center in Arkansas City. Born September 5, 1954 in Big Spring, Texas, she was the daughter of Jerome and Darlene (Lutz) Berning.
Jerome R. “Jerry” Seeger, age 89, of Independ ence, MO, passed peacefully on August 13, 2024. Jerry’s life will be celebrated on Thursday, August 22, 2024. The family will receive friends for a visitation from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. with burial to follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Lunch will be provided following the burial at St. Joseph Church. Funeral care was entrusted to the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Memorials may be left to the National Kidney Foundation, Alzheimer’s Association, or American Association for Cancer Research. Jerome was born on April 14, 1935, in Atchison, KS, the son of Gerard Benedict Seeger and Genevieve Eleanor (Kane) Seeger. He attended catholic schools in Atchison for his entire education; beginning at St. Joseph Grade School, was a graduate of the 1953 class of Maur Hill Prep, and finished at St. Benedict’s College. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, Anti-Aircraft Division, from 1 MAR 1955 until his honorable discharge on 30 JAN 1962. He was a member of St. Mark’s Church in Independence and also enjoyed mass at St. Robert Bellarmine in Blue Springs. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion in Independence, MO.
Fred Shade, 78, Atchison, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2024. He was born on April 8, 1946, to Lee and Anna (Heugel) Shade outside of Easton, Kansas. He married Betty Ann Lamar on February 22, 1969. Fred worked for Atchison Casting for 33 years before retiring. He also worked for Gigstad Fertilizer Company. He was a member of the Nortonville Pleasant Grove Christian Church. He was the woodworking teacher for the Atchison County 4-H Club for over 20 years. Fred loved mentoring the children he interacted with and had a special bond with them, lovingly referring to them as his “grandkids”. Fred enjoyed woodworking and was a master craftsman. He would build anything for anyone and loved helping others. He also enjoyed playing cards, hunting, and fishing. He had a great sense of humor and would always have something ornery to say. He also had a caring heart and was a friend to many. Fred was blessed with many special friendships in his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Anna Shade, and his siblings, Carl Shade, Clarabelle Shade, Mary Wiley, and Larry Shade. Survivors include his wife, Betty Ann Shade; children, Teresa Atzenweiler (Dan) and Brandon Shade (Jennifer); grandchildren, Dalton (Haley), Garrett, Caigen (Gabrielle), and Coy Atzenweiler, Emma and Rae Scott; great-grandchildren, Axel, Bowen, Declan and Cian Atzenweiler; siblings, Robert Shade (Cherie), Stella Hogan, Richard Shade, Jean Shimp, and Verda Visocsky; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorial Service to be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 17, Nortonville Pleasant Grove Christian Church. Visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Nortonville Pleasant Grove Christian Church or the Atchison County 4-H Club. Fred was a member of the Missouri Cremation Service. Donald Lyn Quaife, 77, of Sabetha, Kansas, died on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Midland Care Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas. Donald was born on December 28, 1946, to Donald LeRoy Quaife and Melba Louise (Hedrick) Quaife in Horton, Kansas. Donald was united in marriage to Jerri Sue Niehues on November 17, 1990. Donald loved playing his bass guitar and watching his many sporting events. Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jerri Sue; his brother, Gary Wayne Quaife; and his sister, Cheryl Louise Potter. Donald is survived by his brother, Stephen Ross Quaife, and Stephen’s wife, Sherry, of Stover, Missouri.

She enjoyed shopping, riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, and raising and breeding Schnauzers. Linda especially loved her children and bossing her husband around. Linda married Tom Miller on May 20, 2000, at Trinity Lutheran Church, he survives in the home.
