Two 1-run losses put an end to the Doniphan County American Legion baseball teams bid at a state title this past weekend in Marysville.

Doniphan County advanced Thursday with a victory over Hoisington, taking them down 5-0 with a Zeb Speer 1-hitter. From there, DC took a 7-6 loss to Iola and fell 5-4 to Beloit on Saturday — both games decided in extra innings.

DC vs. Beloit

On Saturday, DC took on Beloit with Bryson Kirkland at the mound. DC battled through eight innings, but six errors contributed to their demise.

Beloit made it on base with an error in the eighth, and another error gave the base runner time to get their final run. In the bottom of the eighth, Kirkland hit a single to get on base. Clayton Ridout and Brock Blair both hit pop flies that were caught. Kirkland attempted to run home on a wild pitch, but there was not enough time and he was tagged for the last out of the game, ending DC’s season.

DC vs. Hoisington

Zeb Speer pitched a 1-hitter on Thursday as Doniphan County shut out Hoisington 5-0 in the opening round of the AA State Tournament.

DC’s game against Hoisington had a slow start. It wasn’t until the fourth inning that DC got on the board when Speer ran home on a passed ball to score. In the fifth, Wil Smith hit a triple for an RBI and the sixth inning was big for DC, as Ridout singled and Reid Greaser followed with a double to bring in Ridout for a run. Tyler Franken singled and then ran to third on an overthrow, and earned an RBI as Ridout ran in. Smith hit a single to bring in Franken for the fifth and final run of the game.

Hays beat Iola 7-4 to win the state tournament.
