WATHENA — Doniphan County Post 55 kept their bats hot as the night cooled off in a 14-6 win over the Atchison Senior A’s in five innings in the second game of a doubleheader in Wathena.
Doniphan County won the first game 10-0 in four innings.
Doniphan struck first in the bottom of the first, putting up two runs on A’s starter Augie Scholz.
Nathan Gaarder hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Reid Greaser, who reached on a single. Tucker Morris added to the lead driving in Chris Winkel.
“I was really glad to see it, we were attacking the ball again,” said Doniphan County manager Vernie Coy. “We have a tendency to watch too many pitches go by; good pitches, bad pitches.”
Doniphan couldn’t find a ball they didn’t like in the second inning, scoring five runs on three hits. Cuttar Huss led off the inning, reaching on an error. Hunter Idol would bring him in two batters later with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Following a Greaser walk, Winkel and Gaarder smashed back-to-back doubles to push the Doniphan County lead to 7-0.
Atchison clawed their way back into the game in the top of the third.
Aided by six free passes – four walks and two hit batters – by Doniphan starter Wyatt Huss, Atchison cut the deficit to 7-5.
Noah Baniewicz moved Atchison back within one in the top of the fourth with a solo shot over the left field fence to make it 7-6.
Huss’ night was done after the Baniewicz homer and a walk to Bonnel. Gaarder relieved him, getting two straight groundballs to end the inning.
Doniphan County rallied in the bottom of the fourth to claim the lead for good.
Winkel provided the big hit in the inning, a two-run single that scored Greaser and Luke Smit, who had reached on singles.
Wil Smith picked up his second RBI of the game with a double to score Winkel.
All together, Doniphan County strung together six hits to bring its lead to 11-6.
Greaser put the finishing touches on a day where he went 6-for-6 with six hits and four RBIs in the bottom of the fifth.
He singled in Huss and Idol to push DC’s lead to 13-6.
After a double by Winkel and a walk by Gaarder, Smith ended Atchison’s night with a single to left field, scoring Greaser and making it 14-6, ending the game by run rule.
Doniphan used a seven-run third inning to beat Atchison 10-0 in four innings.
Greaser ruled in the game, going 3-for-3 with a triple, an infield single and the mercy rule-invoking two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.
“He was jumping on the first pitch,” Coy said.
Luke Smith led off the high-scoring third inning with a double to the wall in right field, followed by three singles by Garret Dunlap, Greaser and Winkel.
Wil Smith cleared the bases with double to left-center field, pushing the Doniphan lead to 5-0.
Tucker Morris drew a walk following the double. Brody Winder grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Wil Smith. Winder was brought in by Cuttar Huss.
On the mound, Winder dealt four scoreless innings with his only blemish being a lead-off walk to start the game.
The A’s (10-10) will play a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 8 at home against Oskaloosa. Atchison swept Oskaloosa last week.
