The hitters of Doniphan County were back for a semifinal game Friday night against Larned in the AA State Tournament at David Regan Stadium in Fort Scott.
After a slow start Wednesday and Thursday – they scored eight combined runs in first two games, but won both – Doniphan County came out swinging Friday night. Unfortunately, they were one run short, falling 7-6 when Larned scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Brody Winder got DC started with a 2-run single in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. Larned answered with a single and two runs walked in for a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Wyatt Huss started on the mound for Doniphan, but Reid Greaser – typically found behind the plate in the catcher position – came in as relief in the first as Huss struggled to find the strike zone.
Doniphan fired up in the second inning with a Wil Smith single to score Hunter Idol and Tucker Morris followed with a three-run triple to bring in Greaser, Cuttar Huss and Nate Gaarder for a 6-3 lead. Larned answered in the bottom of the inning with a run.
The bats fell silent for Doniphan County for the next three innings, and they played strong defense to keep Larned from scoring – including a great double play by first basemen Luke Smith.
Larned added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie.
With the game still tied 6-6 in the bottom of seventh, Larned hit a double and then a single. An intentional walk loaded bases to create force outs at each base. Winder, at catcher, recorded an out at home, then threw to first for an attempted double play, but the ball hit the base runner and got loose. Luke Smith, first baseman, scrambled after the ball and threw home, but a wild throw allowed the winning run to score.
