Sean Mason rears back for a pitch against McLouth on Monday night. Mason and Atchison won easily, 11-0, to advance to the winner’s bracket of the zone tournament.

WATHENA – The Atchison Junior A’s started off the 2015 Northeast Zone Tournament with a bang on Monday, beating McLouth 11-0 in four innings.

Hunter Ostertag started the game off by lofting a fly ball to right field. McLouth misplayed the ball, allowing Ostertag to scoot to third, but he scored on an errant throw. The A’s led 1-0 after the first batter of the game, but they were just getting started.

Austin Bonnel singled, stole second base and advanced to third and then home on consecutive wild pitches – a common theme on the night. Adam Smith worked a walk, stole second and scored on Hunter Wahwahsuck’s single.

After two more stolen bases, Wahwahsuck scored when Parker Welch grounded to the pitcher – who threw the ball away to allow Welch to advance to second. He scored when Kevin Lykins roped a one-hopper off the left-field wall for a double. Lykins would later score on an error by the McLouth catcher.

After the dust had settled, Atchison led 6-0 just three outs into the game.

Sean Mason took the bump for Atchison and pitched all four innings. He gave up one hit – a double – and recorded two strikeouts for the win.

The A’s added a run in the second when Wahwahsuck drove in Smith once again.

They slammed the door in the fourth, however. Ostertag singled, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Following another pitch, Ostertag baited the McLouth catcher into a pick-off attempt, but broke for home on the throw to score.

Bonnel was hit by a pitch and stole second. Wahwahsuck picked up his third RBI by driving in Bonnel and later scored on a McLouth error. Lykins reached on the error and came around to score to add another insurance run.

The A’s finished the game off with a tidy double play in the bottom of the fourth to advance to the winner’s bracket and a matchup with Marysville on Tuesday.
