The Atchison High Redmen fell in the second round of regionals in a crushing 17-1 loss against Chanute High School Tuesday at Atchison High School.
The Redmen were able to defeat Osawatomie 3-2 in their first game on the day.
Coach Case Purdy was satisfied his team’s first round victory.
“It just boiled down to who made more mistakes and they made a couple more mistakes than we did,” Purdy said. “We had a couple of timely hits when we needed them and it worked out for us.”
The second game however turned to be quite rough one for the Redmen with Chanute hopping to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Purdy discussed what lead to the Redmen’s struggles in the second game.
“We didn’t make plays and we didn’t get the hits when we needed them,” Purdy said. “That was basically the bottom line there and their kid threw well. We just didn’t make the plays and we made more mistakes and that’s what cost us the game.”
Chanute dominated throughout the game and despite a home run from Sophomore Patrick Denton, the Redmen just couldn’t find a spark while hitting.
Despite the season ending loss, Purdy was satisfied with how Redmen baseball performed this season.
“They did everything we expected them to,” Purdy said, “They came out and competed every night. They won ten games as a team and they won the league title for the third year in a row.”
