Dr. Susan Myers, USD 409 Superintendent of Schools issued a letter to parents and caregivers concerning the unexpected death of an Atchison High School student on Wednesday.

Myers announced that school administration have initiated steps to support students and staff. There will be trained counselors available to meet with students help them throughout their time of grief. School counselors will also be available to contact if a child needs more support to cope with the tragedy.

Myers urged parents whose children might already use professional mental health services to share information with the counselor in effort to provide additional support.

Myers offered a listing of resources that may be of help to families and individuals throughout this difficult time as well as support information about stages of grief and signs of depression in children and adolescents.
