A young Atchison Elementary School pupil attempted to bring a toy gun to school on the morning of May 3, according to an Atchison Public Schools texted alert.

“No students or staff was in any danger at any time,” AES Primary Principal Heather Renk reported. “The toy gun was inside a backpack along with some toy cars and a teddy bear.”

Renk’s message indicated pupils present on the bus immediately reported the toy gun’s presence to the bus driver. The incident was investigated and responded to.

Superintendent Susan Myers described the toy gun as a hollow, plastic, toy of a simple design.

“There was no threat,” Myers said, adding the toy was in the boy’s backpack during bus transport to school.

After the bus driver was alerted, the incident was reported Apple Bus Company and the principal. An investigation ensued.

According to policy children are not supposed to bring toys to school from home, Myers said. The young boy attends one of the primary grades.

Atchison Globe reached out to Apple Bus Company, they had not responded yet as of May 4.
