Atchison High School students and staff were not at risk of harm at any time Friday morning despite a BB gun found in a student backpack at school.
AHS Assistant Principal Matt Renk sent notification about 10:30 a.m. to alert parents, patrons and interested parties by email.
Law enforcement was immediately notified of the incident, Renk messaged.
Superintendent Susan Myers described the BB gun as one resembling a handgun.
The AHS principal discovered the BB gun inside the students’ bag while visiting about an unrelated topic, Myers communicated by email to Atchison Globe.
“The school followed board policies concerning possession of a B.B. gun,” Myers wrote. “At no time was there a safety threat.”
Police Chief Mike Wilson confirmed police responded to the presence of a small BB handgun at AHS. The matter remains under investigation as police continue to work the case.
There were no arrests, Wilson said, but the BB gun was confiscated. Wilson also confirmed there was never a threat to any of the students or staff members at AHS.
