A local man is free as of Friday night on $15,000 bail following his arrest Wednesday in connection with a May domestic battery incident.

Julian A. Gerard, 30, of Atchison, is facing one count aggravated domestic battery — a felony charge — and one misdemeanor count of domestic battery. Gerard appeared on Friday, June 14, for his appointment in Atchison County District Court. Attorney J. David Farris has been appointed to serve as Gerard’s defense counsel. The two are scheduled to return 9 a.m. Friday, June 2, for Gerard’s first appearance in court with counsel.

Charges against Gerard arose from an early morning disturbance report, alleging he put his hands on the throat of a 21-year-old female and choked her, said Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson. The victim referred to Gerard as her boyfriend, according to police reports.

Officers responded at about 5:30 a.m. May 15 to the disturbance scene. Although it was reported the victim was choked, she did not receive any immediate medical treatment that police are aware of.

Wilson said the report was forwarded to the county prosecutor and a warrant for Gerard’s arrest was subsequently issued. An officer observed Gerard in a vehicle June 12 along the western edge within Atchison city limits along U.S. Highway 73. The officer then proceeded to make a traffic stop, Wilson said, leading to his detention.
