Superintendent Seth Howard of the Atchison County Road and Bridge Department, second from left, presents information to county commissioners in 2015. The county government parted ways with Howard in April.

A longtime county road worker has been named to lead the county’s road and bridge department to fulfill the position recently left vacant following the recent termination of the road superintendent.

Atchison County commissioners took action and formally appointed Interim Superintendent Mark Gentry to supervise the county road crews. Gentry was the one appointed Tuesday, May 7 after commissioners emerged from a closed door session to individually interview three prospects for the interim appointment.

County Counselor Patrick Henderson and Human Resource Director Jamie Madison were present for the interviews.

Commissioners voted unanimously voted to terminate the former road and bridge Superintendent Seth Howard after an executive session April 30. The termination was effective the same day.

Information for this story is based on the unofficial meeting notes of Atchison County Clerk Michelle Phillips.
