Atchison Public School leaders accepted a recommendation to hire a new administrator during a noontime meeting Wednesday.
Jason Schroeder has been hired to serve as the assistant principal/activities director at Atchison High School for the 2019-2020 schoolyear. Schroeder officially steps into the position on July 1 to fulfill the role newly hired AHS Principal Matt Renk.
Renk is preparing to vacate the position on the heels of current AHS Prinicipal Bryon Hanson’s resignation. Hanson announced his resignation April to accept a superintendent’s position in Nebraska.
Board members President Herb Gwaltney, Bill Shipley, Diane Liebsch, Sean Crittendon and John Eplee, by telephone, unanimously approved the hire.
Board members Vice-president Carrie Sowers and Rick Zumbrunn were absent.
Board members elected to proceed and take action on Schroeder’s hire after board members waived, by verbal consensus, their privilege to discuss the non-elected personnel matter behind closed doors.
Schroeder has administrative experience from when he served as the assistant principal and athletic director at USD 336 Holton High School.
Prior to the meeting, Gwaltney passed information to his colleagues to read from Kansas Association of School Boards Legal Services. The publication focuses on options school board members can adopt concerning the organization of fiscal business, election of officers and setting the regular monthly meeting schedule.
All options to consider are part of recent statutory revisions in accordance with SB130 that became effective in April 25 in the Kansas Register. Gwaltney recommended board members put the matter on an upcoming agenda for a discussion at a later date.
