AES parent supporters are hopeful their spring fundraiser will put some spring in the youngsters’ step while they pick up a pace toward a fun time together.

The inaugural Atchison Elementary School Fun Run/Walk, a day of fun, fitness and fundraising is scheduled for Friday, April 27, on the AES grounds.

The Atchison Elementary School Community Club is sponsoring the fundraising event to provide money for classroom needs, student incentives for good behaviors, rewards and other activities to benefit AES students. Community Club members have set a goal to raise $10,000 from the event.

Co-chairwoman Kelly Julo, AES Community Club, described the group a parent organization comprised of members who volunteer to help with the school events and activities. The run/walk will take the place of the traditional spring fundraiser. Instead of selling things, Julo said the parent group decided to try something different for the youngsters.

“It will be a fun day to be outside with your friends,” Julo said. “We are hoping it will be something we can grow on from year to year.”

The event takes place during the school day so that whole student body comprised of 800 children can participate. Club members will also provide water and a fresh fruit snack at the end of the course for all classes.

The course encompasses the paved surfaces and soccer fields around AES school grounds. There will be an obstacle course comprised of hurdles and tunnels to go through on portions of the athletic fields. Each class will have its own designated time when the groups of 140 pupils are on the course. Intermediate students will run/walk the course twice within the same time allotted.

In the event of rain or other inclement weather the fun/run event will take place on Monday, April 30. The scheduled class run/walk times are:

Kindergarten 9 to 9:30 a.m.

First grade, 10 to 10:30 a.m.

Second-graders take the track from 11 to 11:30 a.m.

Fifth –graders come on at Noon to 12:30 p.m.

Fourth-grade is next at 1 to 1:30 p.m.

The third-graders wind down the event from 2 to 2:30 p.m.

Each child who turned in their respective pledge sheet to raise $20 by April 13 will earn a commemorative event T-shirt for their efforts.

Julo said area businesses were sent letters that offered opportunities to sponsor at the various levels with an April 12 deadline for name recognition in print on the T-shirts.

Volunteers are wanted to assist with the Fun/Run Walk throughout various time of the day. The volunteers will supervise students throughout the course, monitor obstacles and hand out snacks. Contact the community club to volunteer at aescommunityclub@usd409.net.

Because the focus is on the AES pupils, school officials request younger than school-aged children do not attend the event.

The Community Club continues to accept donations for this event and activities throughout the school year. Donors can make checks payable to Atchison Elementary Community Club. Mail checks to Atchison Elementary School, 825 N. 17th Street.

The Community Club recently purchased 26 iPads for the AES Library from funds collected through previous fundraising events, Julo said. The USD 409 board members recently accepted the gift earlier in the school year on behalf of the school. Other Community Club-sponsored events are Donuts With Dads and Muffins with Moms at AES.
