McCarthy, Thomas H. 1917-2018

BOISE, Idaho Thomas Henry McCarthy, 101, of Boise, died on Sept. 4, 2018, at the MorningStar assisted living facility.

Thomas was born on Jan. 25, 1917, in Atchison, to Bertha and Thomas McCarthy Sr. His father died in 1918 of influenza, and he was raised with his sisters, Jane and Dorothy, by his mother.

He went to work at a young age, delivering the Atchison Daily Globe newspaper, and as a teenager, working in the stockroom at the local S.S. Kresge store.

He graduated from Maur Hill Academy high school in 1935.

He continued working at Kresges until he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the infantry in the Pacific Theater.

After the war ended, he returned to work at Kresges. He managed Kresge stores in a variety of locations, including Chicago and Quincy, Illinois, Minot, North Dakota, and Joplin, Missouri. In 1966, he was asked to manage one of the first Kmart stores in Boulder, Colorado. He went on to manage the store on Americana Blvd, in Boise, where he remained until his retirement in 1988. Altogether, he worked for the company for more than 50 years.

Thomas met his beloved wife, Dolores, in Chicago. They were married in 1951. He lost Dolores to cancer in 1984 and never remarried. Their son, Thomas III, was born in 1961.

Over the years, Thomas worked long hours to support his family and he spent most of his free time with them.

He enjoyed doing home projects, completing furniture kits, and fashioning canes from the limbs of his backyard apple trees. His home is filled with the beautiful results of these efforts.

He was a devoted Catholic, attending Mass weekly at St. Marks Church with his family and eventually becoming a regular at daily Mass. He participated in many of the churchs ministries.

He was also a long-time member of the Boise Kiwanis Club. During his retirement, he enjoyed Wednesday morning coffees with his friends at McDonalds and he stayed in touch with former co-workers from his Kmart years.

Thomas was a devoted, generous and loving husband and father, as well as a good friend and neighbor to those he knew. He will be greatly missed.

Thomas is survived by: his son, Tom and daughter-in-law Tracy, of Boise; nieces, Jeanne Sorenson and Martha Wright, of Amarillo, Texas, Maria ONeill, of Edgerton, Kansas, Jeanine Emory and Mary Pat Pekara, of Fr. Collins, Colorado; and sister-in-law, Patricia Pedley, also of Ft. Collins.
